Think of the last time you wanted something so much it hurt. Was it something small? Perhaps a trip? To learn a new skill? Was it something big? A dream job? To have a baby?

We all have different desires and passions in this life. We all have an idea of what failure looks like. We know what success looks like.

When I think back on the times in my life I truly wanted something, I tend to remember the ones who told me no. The people who never took me seriously. I look back on those times now and shake my head. I put so much stock into trying to make others happy that I wasted my own time and stifled my own ambition. Can anyone relate?

Despite wasted time and lessons learned I am grateful for where I am today. Every person in your life can teach you something about yourself. Every situation can grow you and make you more resilient. It is never too late to pick up the pieces and start working toward your heart’s desire.

Stop and ask yourself – what is it that you want in this life? What makes you feel passionate and fulfilled? What interests you? What motivates you? Start setting time aside for yourself and take a good, hard look at your goals.

It has taken me a long time to realize – it is not selfish to want something for yourself. Your job (moms this REALLY applies to you) is not to make everyone else happy. You deserve your own time. You deserve to grow intellectually, spiritually, emotionally. You can want something outside of your family and children and that does NOT make you a bad mom. If anything, caring about your own needs and wants, makes you a better mom.

There are times in life that despite working hard for what we want, for multiple reasons, maybe it doesn’t pan out. You didn’t land that dream job. You’re not having a baby. Sometimes we need to adjust our perspective and find another way. Can you start your own business? Can you adopt? It all depends on how important your desire is and what you are willing to do to achieve your goals. Even then – sometimes things don’t work out the way we want them too.

Whatever your desire, don’t be afraid to try. Block out the voices of those who would discourage you or try to hold you back. We all get one life and it’s up to us to make the most of it. Stop wasting time and start setting goals. If it matters to you and you can’t fight the ‘what ifs’ then it’s time to make a change and go after what you want.

The new year is full of possibilities, new experiences, and the chance to really go after what you want. There might not be a later – so make the most of now.
