Moms Should Not Be Allowed To Get Sick

It is a cruel joke of a – a higher power, mother nature, biology – blame who you want – that moms can get sick. Here’s why:

  1. Moms Do Not Get Sick Days: If you hold a traditional job and you get sick, you possess the ability to call in to work and take a sick day. When you are a mom this option does not exist. You are on call 24/7. For the rest of your life.
  2. Responsibilities Do Not Just Disappear: You are still expected to care for tiny humans. They cannot change their own diapers. They cannot feed themselves. The dishes will not do themselves. The food fairy will not come and prepare a gourmet meal for the family. Everything still needs managing and that is on you mom.
  3. No Extra Sleep For You: Typically when sick all you want to do is lay down and rest. A nap would be nice, helpful even for recovery. As a mom in general you are not sleeping well. As a sick mom, there is no hope.
  4. We Take Care Of Everyone Else: We already do so much for our families everyday. We take care of the menial tasks others don’t think of. We carry the mental load. We spend so much time caring for everyone else that wouldn’t it be wonderful to have one day somebody cared for you?

In truth, even when sick, we love our families and will still do our best to care for them. Being a mom is hard work, but even when sick we are up to the task.

  1. When my daughter is sick, my son-in-law takes more responsibilities on him and lets her slip. Not all the time, of cause, he has his job, but his one is more flexible. I didn’t have this when my kids were small, and almost dies once, because I refused to be hospitalized for an emergency – nobody could take care of my twins without me.

    1. I am fortunate to have a husband that helps out too. He works hard, but as soon as he is home at night he will bring me dinner or get the kids out of the house (when I am sick). It makes a difference.
It is amazing what we moms will do to take care of our kids – even when it means potentially dying!
